That is what happened with Cervo. A wealthy buyer bought the company to keep the "tradition" alive. As for Borsalino I hope that a company such as Gucci or Prada will have an interest in keeping the name going. There isn't another hat company that could buy the factory outright ...too expensive.
Cervo is the only other factory that does their own felt in Italy. But there are many problems with this factory so i doubt they would ever get the license to produce Borsalino if the factory ever closes.
Im hoping there will be a new owner who wil be able to put money back into the company...
Stetson has actualy been gainig some momentum in the hat market. Weve been getting more requests for the new open crown styles that they now produce. They are a good 125.00 less than a Borsalino.
Something is definitely brewing there in Italy but it is a big mess. The biggest problem is that the owner is not to be found. This is causing a major problem for the courts in trying to straighten out the mess of actual ownership. The company has plenty of orders but the banks are tying up...
It was Bill and Caldwell. They were the second distributor from the 1920's until the 1960's. After that the distribution was taken over by George Sternaker (nephew of Arthur Sternaker who worked for Bills and Caldwell). The warehouse was in Boonton NJ. They distributed Borsalino, Habig, Joseph...
The best way to see what brands were available here before WW2 would be to look at old issues of the American Hatter and Hat life. Borsalino regularly advertised there and that was about it with the exception of one or two smaller companies from Italy . It wasn't until the 1950's that Barbisio...
As far as I know, Borsalino started to sell in North America around 1909. There may have been two different distributors here as there were two separate lines being made in Italy. Believe it or not , most of the pre WW2 Borsalino hats that I have are from Canadian stores. I have a collapsible...
The Borsalino factory moved into its present location around 1986. One easy way to tell whether the hats is pre 86 is to look at the leather sweatband. pre 86 hats will say "Original House" in English. When they moved, the stamp was converted to italian and will say "Antica Casa" . The linings...
There are around five or six factories left in Italy that make hats. Borsalino and Cervo are the only ones who still make their own bodies. The rest buy from Fepsa and Tonak .
Theres only so much that Hatco can do as far as new styles. This collection by far is the best in many years. I don't think they could make any more styles. My only complain is that there should be more in promoting the 150th anniversary. How many companies today are that old !!
Im suprised that the lining is sewn into the hat. From the dating , it seems the hats is from around 1990. Borsalino didnt sewn in the linings after they moved in 1986. The color (34) is called Monlov.
