I always find it interesting when somebody with so few posts suddenly gets the moxie to start making such bold claims using only Japanese repros as the basis of their argument.
I’ve spoken to John Chapman at length on the phone about the pocket spacing, so it's not some weird quirk he's landed...
I'd go for a Longshoreman from Aero - it's bike-worthy, got pockets and sheepskin-lined. Ask them to put a muton collar on it and you're good to go: http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/product-detail.php?id=27
The plus is that you'll be able to spec size as well.
You'd probably buy it because it's stitch perfect! These aren't really aimed at the casual buyer - you could buy a cheap generic one and be happy with it. You go to John for the quirks of fit and design that appeared in the dozen or so various contracts..
I think you've done exactly what the original pattern maker did. I'll admit it's odd, if you think about it, but not every maker actually made jackets until they were handed the contract at which point they had to get somebody to make the pattern for them. You don't notice it on a casual glance...
Pockets were 'off centre' on the original contract - I think this was somebody trying to align them by eye rather than measuring them. This was something only corrected on later jackets. And if you look at the collar on the original, the snap sits on the seam as well.
Here's a vintage one...
This is a really good point and one worthy of a thread of its own. I remember seeing a couple of Alexander Leather jackets that were based on vintage jackets, and they were big pocketed horrors. It wasn't so much that they were inaccurate, it was just that they were horrible designs in themselves.
Yes, it looks like something similar to Levi's Menlo Cossack: http://archive.hickorees.com/brand/levis-vintage-clothing/product/1930s-menlo-leather-jacket-dark-brown
Ken was on BBC Radio Scotland today, chatting about Aero's Freddie Mercury jacket in the new Bohemian Rhapsody film, but also much, much more...

Fantastic, Nick. You almost tempt me into buying one of these things. I just worry that we'd be back into ANJ-4 territory in terms of bulk and warmth. Perhaps a B-6 is a more my speed... *eyes Aero B-6s*
I think Andrew has stepped back from posting on the FL and VLJ. You'd be better seeking him out on the Irvin Flying Jackets 'collectors and enthusiasts' Facebook group.
Big fan of Nudies back in the day. Personally, I go with the classic vintage fit for my jeans - wide leg and high waist - and find them far more flattering than skinny types. I think people have visions of the 80s pants when they think of high waist jeans - I had a pair that were ridiculous: the...
