I think the hide choice is probably the biggest factor for mobility in a jacket. Design can vary by body type, like for thinner folks having a form fitting jacket can actually be less restrictive than bigger body types.
Riding jackets tend to have thicker hides to gain slide protection in a...
@Hobbes1 Amazing jacket sir! And about time you made with the pics, lol.
Looking at your pictures, looks like it's a very supple, non stiff leather, would love to see it worn just to see how it drapes. Looks like Shawn is gaining speed on getting the character right, your first photos looks...
Agreed. Going with 5* to get a good fit takes some beta testing and some risk, almost everyone who got a jacket they liked had to go through a couple, thus adding to the cost since there's no return. Myself, I already discarded one because it was not wearable since I was a CHL guinea pig.
Well, at the beginning, 5* was more or less what you expected, a cheap alternative, because that's what they were doing, making jackets to a very low price point. Things like discontinued stitch lines, mismatched thread, unfinished edges, etc, all the usual low quality for low price stuff. So...
There is a ton of info in the 5* thread.
In short, it's not quite as simple as 5* being a cheaper direct alternative to an established western/Japanese brand. So here's the distilled calculus from that thread based on data given by forum members.
Financially, the labor cost is about $20, plus...
Previously the milled cxl would've worked, and I did have a CHL jacket too, my normal cxl (skived) was more wearable so this milled one definitely would've been better. I just want leather that drapes now.
JL already skived the milled cxl to 2oz ready to go. It's very similar to tumbled cxl in...
Lol I hope I didn't add scrotum grains to our lexicon, lol. Actually, JL has a milled CXL thats also skived too that I was planning to use for a jacket. It is softer than cxl, but still not soft soft. They also have a tumbled version too, but it's still stiff.
I have been looking at that leather and was wondering the stiffness on them. I imagine though to gain that character and texture, there's gotta be some stiffness, like a, hmm, crispiness/starchiness to the leather? So like it's soft but it still retains a structure vs just draping like a towel.
You POS influenced me to get me CXL/CHL, you need to take responsibility for your influence, lol jk.
Lets not get crazy, I still love CXL leather, yeah it's a pain because it's stiff but to me, and this is just me, I love the character of CXL leather. I like how imperfect it is, just has a ton...
Lets not forget that the chl was based on a 5 or 6oz Horween CXL that was sent in for a custom job. Shawn replicated it pretty admirably for a first try thinking this was something popular, few to several people bought it during the hype only to realize that yeah super thick leather is tough...
100%. Things like 6oz leather, not skiving folded edges, 8 stitches per inch, impossible perfect fits, etc, I think Shawn learned quickly there is no broad appeal. As I said, look at what leather makers like Schott and Vanson use.
You bought the wrong fit. Every brand also have different ethos, so you have to find the brand and fit that works for you, and even then different denims wear differently, just like leather jackets.
But raw denim is stiff and is known to "pinch", and knowing you you're probably trying to find...
Agreed, it'd be nice to have a quarter or third priced Aero option. I think he's figuring out his stylish options and frankly the majority of customers aren't interested in chromexel leathers or understand the nuances between the leathers we love here.
The reality though is that Schott and...
