The first hat is a short enough crown that crown taper is not easy to see. The second hat is a taller crown with no taper. The taper is whether the crown "barrel" is the same size from brim the small transition for the top of the crown or does the crown get smaller as it goes up to that point...
Does anyone know anything about Tacchino Italian made hats? I have seen them for sale a few places recently online. I have only seen western but their website shows fedoras.
Felt beaver content is one of the most consistently inconsistent grading systems I've ever run across. The variables of where on the beaver's body the fur is sourced, shellac content, mercury and non mercury felting, and pouncing and you have quite a mess. I'm only referring to the first half...

I L O V E your hat collection, so many nice ones BUT I get spruce sap stain anxiety every time the fedora in the trees display is used. I assume my worries are unfounded..........
Did you pull back the white insie liner to look for any labels or grease pencil writing? The size label referred to above is under that liner, if it is there. If the hat was ever cleaned and reblocked then the sweatband could have been removed and the cleaning may have washed off any writing and...
I'm in TX and wear felts year round, though less and not much during daytime in the summer months. I have not had noticeable shrinkage in vintage hats, I assumed they had already shrunk before I got them. New hats or relatively new used but unworn used hats have always shrunk a bit. Not based...
I agree. Stretching too often has the side effect of changing brim shape permanently. I have tried stretching and also just changing the ovality and I have several hats that I can't get brim shape anywhere near to my liking. The crown might get taper from stretching and it may may change the...
I have over 30 western hats 100x and up. 3 of them are Northwest hats, 2 are Dorer, and 1 is a Capital Hatters. The others are factory hats. The oldest is 40+ years old (resistol touch of mink) and the newest is a NW hat (Aug 22). The best value by far are the NW hats. 1/2 of these are worn...
I hat a really nice Resistol I was wearing while tractor mowing get knocked off by a branch and go right under the shredder/mower. That stitiching looks like the pattern needed to fix that.
I totally agree with you on the quality of the sewn details and the real silk liners the high line vintage hats have. Ditto on the old felts. I do still wonder what these well made modern customs will be like when they are the same age as the vintage gems. It will be very hard to ever know even...
I would think it is 20 years or little bit more. The font and style of the sweatband attached label shown changed in late 90's or early 2000's. The quality of the straw hats also worsened not long after that too.
I am surprised at ad placements on many sites I visit. The ads on here for the cheapest of the cheap hats makes me wonder if a site for connoisseurs of the finest select grass raised and long aged beef steaks has vienna sausage and pickled pig's feet ads on their page? Some serious AI needs to...
Have you seen the charge for the soiling and other use markings? That cowboy did a $500 number on his hat. Or was it Nick Fouquet you saw in the arena working on a customer's hat?
