Glad my comments helped you out a bit. Like most others, I learned about JL from this forum and wouldnt have known about them otherwise so its nice to know I've returned the favor. As I've said elsewhere before, Alan gets really excited about the custom work which was a very nice change from...
Nailed the fit. I'm waiting on a custom jacket from them that should ship in the next week or so, but I wasn't bold enough to size for an exact fit in the body. I wear to many thicknesses of clothes and go up and down in weight about 10 lbs in either direction.
You notice it when you put it on, but then forget about it until the end of the day when you take it off and realize your traps are a little sore and you feel lighter on your feet lol. Its a love it or hate it thing and I'm one of those psychotic few that seem to love it.
Wow. Just wow. I thought I had seen the worst of vendor attitude and rudeness from one of our American jacket makers, but this takes the cake. What has been said in this thread from the company representative is enough to convince me never to buy from them. A growing number of companies make...
Edward, Its a highwayman in a cheyenne cut. It is one of my favorite jackets. It weights almost 13 pounds, but I had them hunt down extra heavy steerhide, so I'd imagine its a pound or two heavier than normal. You definitely know your wearing it, but since you have a LW B3, I'm sure you know...
The ANJ-4 is definitely similar to the B-3. I have an ANJ-4 / B-3 cross that I had custom made by aero a few years ago and saying it's warm is an understatement. Mine is entirely overlayed in midweight horse, so its probably a little warmer than normal, but I doubt its that much different. If...
Edward, its not really fair to compare any of the brands mentioned with Schott. Its a totally different business model and quality requirements. Schott is high quality for a mass produced item. They are absolutely functional and well constructed jackets, but the materials and construction are...
I don't have a LW, but one thing you may want to consider in price is whether or not you need custom sizing. If you can wear an off the shelf jacket, you can get Schott's for amazing prices. I like extremely heavy leather (5oz and up) so Schott isn't on the top of my list, but I have to say...
I spoke with Alan again today working on finalizing a jacket he will be making for me and I was pretty shocked at just how many types of hides, linings, furs, etc he has. Another thing that is wonderful about working with Alan is happy to go searching for something he may not have. There are a...
Hey all. I figured I'd chime in here since I have some experience with very heavy leather (as a few people eluded to, I'm a heavy leather junkie). I have samples of 5 of Johnson's leathers and have been talking to Alan for about 4 months while we have been searching for a hide that works for...
I think a lot of the decision (besides money) comes down to style.
I have either ordered or spoken with Aero, Schott, Eastman, LW, Cirrus, and Johnson Leathers regarding custom jackets. First thing I would recommend is staying far away from Schott. They make ok jackets, but depending on...
I work on sites that tend to tear apart clothing semi regularly and I had aero overlay my entire b3 in mid weight horsehide. It wears like iron. Its not as resilient as their heavy weight steer, but it does the job and is very flexible and easy to wear.
The being unable to move well in stiff jackets is really overblown IMO. Aside from repetitive fine motor movements (like driving for hours), I only have had this issue for the first year After that the areas that don't need to bend much are still stiff, but not the arms, shoulders, torso, etc...
I've only tried horsehide on and seen one other person's well worn in jacket in person. per oz, I think its stiffer than steer, but its limited in its thickness from what I am told. Oz per oz I'd bet FQHH is tougher than steer to and it certainly patinas very well, but I can go thicker in...
FQHH is not thick enough for my liking, although it is a nice combination of weight and pliability. The biggest reason is living in an area with lots of horses, I've seen what can pass as "natural causes of death" from immoral owners and I prefer to wear an animal that I also eat. My intent...
I also asked him to include a sample of the bison, but Im sure that is out of my price range. Its not so much the weight I am after, but the thickness and stiffness in that order. I've mentioned mm thickness to several jacket makers over the years, but oz weight seems to be the only realistic...
Thanks for congrats on the graduate degree. I've worked with my current company as an employee for 8 years. During the two years I contracted for them prior to that they had a hiring freeze, but after 50 - 75 inquiries regarding a full time job, I guess they got tired of listening to me, so...
