    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

After sewing the binding on the brim there are a few ways to go with this hat, I could make this hat into a Fedora with either a teardrop shape or the Indiana Jones bash, or I could make the hat a Fedora with a pencil curl, or I could keep the open crown and put a pencil curl in the hat. The...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, it took most of the day, but I managed to hand sew the brim binding into place. Hand sewing can be a challenge, the thread will twist into knots very easy, so you have to keep one hand on the thread as you pull the needle through the fabric, I know because I use a bit of time untying...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, I am back, I have made a little more progress on my hat project. I watched a few videos on YouTube and tried a new way of making the hat band and bow a single complete unit, I figured out how to do it, however I decided to go with the old way and made the bow separate. For some reason the...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

This has to be my slowest pace for making a hat. I sewed the bow onto the sweatband today then decided to sew the sweatband into the hat and this is my progress so far. Next step, I will sew the ribbon, hatband in place complete with a bow and then the liner. Sewing the ribbon on the brim edge...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

It has been a while since I last posted anything, that was due to a few things, the last thing was attending a wedding, son got married after 15-year engagement, that is another story. Anyway, I recently finished all of the sewing on the sweatband. My next step will be to cut the brim down on...

I purchased the reeding tape and reed from https://www.hatsupply.com/mens-hats-supplies/mens-hat-making-supplies/ , they have everything that you would want for hats, sweatbands, bows, fur felts, liners, ferrules. There is a minimum amount you have to purchase.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

I started working on a new leather sweatband today. I have been busy hand sewing the reeding tape and reed onto the new leather strip that will be a sweatband, not sure how long this will take, my thread keeps getting twisted into knots. I guess that I will have to learn how to use a sewing...

I have been away for a while, but I managed to work on my Tolliker about 3 weeks ago. Here are some photos of my re-work of my first attempt and it works, I used it on the Camel colored hat that I have been working on. It isn't pretty, but it does work.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

I am moving really slow on the hat that I am making; I was able to locate some ribbon for the hat on Etsy, the color is called syrup. It is just a little darker than the hat color and I have decided to do a little pouncing on the hat all over then spray with alcohol and flame it just long enough...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Hi BB, Well, I have decided to take a shot at making my own Tollicker also. I will be using the small one that I made a few months back and add a longer curved base to it, along with a lot of sanding and shaping, hopefully it will work out.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, I purchased some Revlon Hair dye or maybe Hare dye since the fur felt is 100% rabbit, this time I went with a dark auburn color. I followed the instructions, except I added a equal amount of water, mixed everything up, then applied the dye using a paint brush, then I followed the...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, I will be using more hair dye tomorrow, going with a medium Auburn color, I won't be applying the color evenly. I am thinking about saturating the felt in some places and skipping other areas, trying to make it as uneven as I can. I won't be posting any photos until it is totally dry.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

I used some hair dye on my hat hoping for a mottled look and here is the result so far, it looks just a little darker brown in color. I may try a little red hair dye on the hat to see if I can get the effect that I want. The hat does have a little mottling now, however I would like a little bit...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

This is the 100% rabbit fur felt Camel that I will be working on. I worked it onto the block last week and then let it dry, thinking about what I was going to do with this hat. I had already decided on the crown height, brim width, pencil curl and the brim binding. I also made a crown block...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, I am going to start out with a 100% rabbit fur felt that is a camel color and I am going to try a little hair dye applied with a brush and massaged in by hand, I will be using a Auburn Brown hair dye and I won't be applying it evenly, I am going for a mottled look again, this time I am...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Thanks Brent. Now to get back to work on another hat. I am thinking about posting my hats on Ebay for sale, maybe after I get finished with the hat that I am working on right now. Should I post photos of the progress of this project, or just the finished hat?

That is great news, I hope that the Mill Whse get their beaver felts from Ukraine. Things are starting to open up again, so maybe we can all get back to normal, whatever that was. BB I hope that you get all the felts that you need, all of your work is top quality, all you need is the fur felts.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Well, I have been a little busy reworking my rounding jack. I put a new base on it so it would be big enough to use on a long oval hat block, the utility blade is adjustable or can be totally retracted, I am not a fan of accidental cuts. I attached a piece of sheet brass to the bottom to protect...

Help I think I ruined my Aero Premiere Half Belt

There is another option, buy some MILSEK Leather and Vinyl Cleaner and Conditioner, you can buy this at Ace Hardware or from their website. It will clean the leather and condition the leather; it does have some oil in, so if you have tried the Dawn dish washing soap and you haven't got the...

Help I think I ruined my Aero Premiere Half Belt

I will second that idea, send the jacket to Toni, he is willing to take on this challenge and when you're working with leather you have to have some idea what to expect when you do something as simple as applying oil to the leather. When I first started working with leather, I applied Neatsfoot...
