Yessir. That's definitely true. The one caution to really becareful with is that the reed tapes on those older vintage hats are made of cloth with a plastic coating on them and they can be fragile and rip out. Just need to be careful about sliding the new reed through, and especially becareful...
You want to get the ribbon stretched tight around the crown first and sew both ends. Then go back and put the little stitches in afterwards. The way you did it prevented the top of the ribbon from stretching properly and hugging the crown. The little stitches go in last. You'll get the hang of...
That was 11 years ago when I posted this. These days, if the hat's too small for me, I just take it apart and reblock it to my 7 1/4 LO size, (not the 7 1/8 LO as stated in my OP), and change out the sweat. As far as cutting the sweat reed or popping the stitches on the sweat, try stretching it...

You could probably still do your hat business without giving it up entirely. You've been on the Lounge long enough to know the hat styles and block shapes that most here like, and you know the average sizes that most on the Lounge wear. Go back to enjoy hat making. When the urge hits do a couple...
A Bradford that I reblocked to a larger size and restyled sometime back. This one sports a Teardrop crown with a 3 1/4 curled brim.
A whole hour of Hank Sr.
