The Trials and Tribulations of Hat Stiffener

Adding sizers would be a lot easier, just sayin.

The Trials and Tribulations of Hat Stiffener

This sounds like it may be a sizing issue? A hat with less stiffener should conform to your head shape more readily than a very stiff hat. If you're putting your hat on straight (i.e. not doffed to one side, or front/back) and it's dropping to your ears, that hat is too big.

I'm sure you'd be able to grab a brown western on eBay for significantly less than a new hat.

Is there a reason you want it to be an Akubra as opposed to any other western style hat as a donor body? You could save yourself the step of flattening out the curl if you started with an uncurled brim to begin with.

    The Stratoliner Association {Premiere}

Oh no, are they using powder again? That's disheartening. My black Stratoliner has not had any bleeding issues.

Those are good choices. For pre-war hats, the Boss Raw Edge hats were the top of the line, which I believe would make Clear Nutria the best quality for that time period.

    How to travel with hats

So I paid for TSA precheck, mostly because I am chronically late. But an added benefit seems to be that they've been letting me keep my hat on to walk through the metal detector. One time they did ask me to show the inside, but so far nobody has told me to take it off and put it through the machine.

    Question[s] about a Stetson[s]

Well, yes, dress weight hats are dress weight. To be fair, the OR was offered as "the Stockman's dress hat," which to me implies the existence of a separate work hat. And there is also apparently a modern 20x OR.

    Question[s] about a Stetson[s]

So the Stetson quality designations, in ascending order of quality goes: Royal, Royal Deluxe, Excellent Quality/Pure Beaver. Stetson does not disclose the blends, though Stetson Japan recently listed Royal Deluxe as 70% rabbit 30% beaver. Notably this contradicts a previous post which listed it...

    The BORSALINO BROTHERHOOD

Yup, that's the one. The outdoor lighting really captures the finish of the felt. If you're re-listing this one on the 'bay, you may want to throw a Johnny Depp reference in there ;)

Potential for what, exactly? Look, if the hat looks good to you, buy it. Wear it in good health. If you're asking if this is a desirable hat from a collector's point of view, not very likely.

    Fedoras in 1912?

See also this turn of the century Stetson catalog: https://digital.hagley.org/Stetson_1901_Catalogue#page/22/mode/2up The Fedora hat (as in the character in LC), is probably a little incongruous for the time period but certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

When I visited the Garland outlet store (a few years ago), they had a whole pile of those on their steaming table. Can't hurt to give them a ring and see if they'd oblige sending some your way.

    Western, anyone?

Many thanks to @deadlyhandsome for very kindly passing along this mystery Stetson body. One cell red tag, so maybe 40's? Still working on getting that perfect sweat band join. I will put a liner in at some point, but it is a wearable hat again. Forest green, 5 1/2", 3" brim. The hand of the felt...
