When were clip on braces/suspenders first popular?

Trying to dress in the style of the early 1930s would clip on braces have been in use back then or would all men's trousers have had buttons for the braces. Just wondered if clip on ones are a more recent, like 1950s, invention?

The 1943 American Sears and Wards Catalogue clearly displays four styles for clip-on suspenders. They came in a elastic plastic weave, and rayon webbing, as displayed below along side the button-on braces:

Is that a Sunbeam Talbot in your avatar? You didn't venture out down to the New Forest last summer per chance? I saw a very similar one outside the Sir John Barleycorn pub.

Hi GHT, no sadly not, I love those cars but that was taken at Goodwood Revival a few years back. I have 1933 Lagonda which is rather fun and hence trying to get together some kit that broadly matches the era of the car. Here's a snap taken at Brooklands last summer.

How I love the casual way that you have a 1933 Lagonda, not that I'm jealous, much. If you get to the Revival this year, make your way along to where the pin up girls that are The Glam Cabs. That is the drop off point for the VIP's staying at The Goodwood Hotel. Look out for the MG in my avatar, I'm one of The Transport Corps. I love photographing my passengers, here's a few from 2017, the year of the Glastonbury-esque mudbath.

This is not a puncture, it's the accumulation of mud collected from the showground to our campsite.
