Saw The Pogues a couple weeks ago for my 40th b'day here in San Diego. Even after 22 years, never tired of them.

Our family just went to the West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento, CA Fri-Sun 11/20-22/09. My favorite live performers there were two passionate pianists; the formidably talented Frederick Hodges of CA (he also sings) and intensely talented Richard Dowling of TX and NY. Here's a YouTube sampling of them playing, they played these numbers at WCRF:

Richard Dowling playing "Rhapsody in Blue " Part one of two:

Part two of two

Next, Frederick Hodges playing "Lion Tamer Rag"

then a song called "Lover"

Ian Anderson at the Moore (in Seattle) on Nov 14. Great concert!

(though I wish the guy in the center of the third row had had enough manners to have removed his hat during the performance)

Saw Ian Whitcomb and his Bungalow Boys at Cicada last Sunday. They play nicely, mostly late 20s to 30s tunes, but they toss in some early 50s rock and roll...

For those in LA, the 27th of December is going to be great; Dean Mora's 12 piece band is playing at Cicada for only $10. bucks! The last great event of the year for those who appreciate true Jazz/swing, not to be missed!

I'll be getting a cover for that night so I can dance the night away with my lady!

Hope to see some of you there!

Folk and Swing

Last night I heard Strum Therapy at Swallow Hill, a folk music center. They played some of the best acoustical guitar I've heard at last night's Christmas concert. Wessler was a good MC for the show--she was funny and had good timing, besides having a beautiful voice, honed by classical training. You can hear "Breakaway" here and "Christmas Wish" here.

Last Sunday, I heard a swing band called Coravette. The singer had a Broadway style that suited their act. Everybody played well, and there was a good deal of variety, appropriate for swing dancing, in their program.

Thumbs up for both bands.

I saw the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players (NYGASP for short) perform "Ruddigore" at the New York City Center, in Manhattan last night. Just fabulous, totally hilarious and gorgeous music.

Our family went last night to the Niles Silent Film Museum for a special 5th Anniversary showing. Four of their accompanists played for the films, including our family friend, deco and ragtime pianist extraordinaire, Frederick Hodges.

Just before Christmas I saw Buddy Holly, with his show "Holly at Christmas" plus special guest star Elvis. Woiw for one night my little part of England became the rock n roll capital of the world.

At this very moment, Ralph Stanley is on our stage with the Clinch Mountain Boys doing "Man of Constant Sorrow." If you're a fan of "O Brother Where Art Thou," it don't get much better.

Last night, Ani DiFranco was here, in front of an audience made up of every angsty college girl in Northern New England. Our programming is nothing if not eclectic

Depeche Mode with Peter Bjorn and John, on August 29, 2009.
U2 with Muse on October 12, 2009, when they made a swim through The Death Star...um, Jerry World...um, Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

We are going to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy this coming Saturday (Jan 30, 2010), and are seriously contemplating George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic on April 22 at Tha House of Blues in Dallas.
