I remember now. Right after I bought this hat, I read the entire thread and saw your post about the 1980 date and so decided I was getting a post 1980 hat. But when I got the hat and saw that tag, I forgot what you'd said, I guess. Anyway, I didn't know those tags were still used anywhere near...
Thanks for reminding me. Yes, I think I read what you put together, but wasn't thinking about it when I made this post. I don't know who's right or wrong, date wise. I was just going by my general impression that, from what I've seen, it looked to me like all the hatmakers had stopped using the...
Beaver Brand 20X Pure Beaver. 3 1/2 inch brim with 3/8 bound edge and 5 3/4 inch open crown. The reorder tag makes me think this hat is no later than the early 60's or so. My first hat from this brand/group of brands, so I'm only guessing on date. The last pic shows the stub of a price or size...
PS- I'm not claiming that all late 40's Sovereigns have the liner seam on the side or the phrase Stetson Beaver Twenty, but that where these do occur, they are signs of a late 40's hat, or so goes the theory or belief.
Late 1940's Stetson Sovereign, labeled Stetson Beaver Twenty. 2 3/4 inch raw brim and 5 3/4 inch open crown. The liner has the seam on the side instead of the rear, which some say is a sign of a late 40's Stetson. I also believe the Stetson Beaver Twenty phrase is late 40's. Hat just arrived...
I never did get a look at the Boss of Plains stamp inside of that hat you keep loving to show. Think I've posted one elsewhere just as close to the real thing as yours. And I'm sure I've posted a large number of hats attempting to preserve authentic older hats. So all of the time you wasted...
I understand all that quite well, thank you, but since I already have an old Stetson that's real close to the original style, I'm perfectly fine with a more modern take on the BOP theme that has a 6 inch crown, which I have to admit I prefer for wearing.
I'm very clear about that point of view and I agree completely. However, some might say that a Boss of the Plains is whatever Stetson says it is at any point in time.
Resistol Twenty, bought today and hasn't arrived yet. I've only seen 2 other Twentys on the Lounge with this same Resistol logo on the liner, seems like maybe pre 1950. The first use of "Kitten Finish" was 1943. Looks like it might have a Cavanagh edge. Maybe nobody bought it before me because...
Stetson Boss of the Plains. 3 1/2 inch brim and 6 inch open crown. Made under license in England I'm supposing by Failsworth who got the license in 1949. I have no real idea when this hat was made after that, but the liner has a very thin onionskin-like material over the liner and the hat seems...
Stetson Sovereign Beaver Twenty. I'm thinking it's a late 1940's hat. I'll have more to say when it arrives and I post it on the Stetson Sovereign thread.
This isn't a hat I'm waiting for, but an interesting hat-related item I ran across that you all might appreciate. It measures in inches and French lignes.
